WE. Nosaltres i el temps
Mal Pelo
What do we place in the palm of our hand to pass on to future generations? This is the question at the heart of WE, the latest work from Mal Pelo, one of Spain’s foremost dance companies.
Across time and generations, the company explores identity, place and the future. In WE, twelve dancers of different backgrounds and ages search for answers through movement, dance and words – each bringing their own body and perspective.
Inspired by the tension between the individual and the community, and rooted in John Berger’s poem Separation, Mal Pelo explores journey, emigration and the loss of belonging –always returning to the most elemental principle of movement: walking.
Founded in 1989 by María Muñoz and Pep Ramis, Mal Pelo’s work is rooted in a sustained exploration of movement and language through experimentation and dialogue with other disciplines – literature, audiovisual arts, music and light. In 2001, Muñoz and Ramis established L’animal a l’esquena, a multidisciplinary centre for creation and research in Celrà, Girona. Over the years they have forged a distinctive artistic voice and become a landmark company in international contemporary dance. Their work has received numerous awards, among them the National Dance Prize (2002) from the Generalitat Government of Catalonia, the National Dance Prize (2009) from the INAEM–Ministry of Culture, the City of Barcelona Prize (2017), the Critics’ Prize (2018), the Gold Medal of the Spanish Academy of Performing Arts (2022) and the awards for Best Show and Best Sound Design for Highlands (2022) from the Association of Dance Professionals of Catalonia.
