Nomadics
Voetvolk | Lisbeth Gruwez & Maarten Van Cauwenberghe
Practical information and accessibility
Before Nomadics, the company’s dancers will lead a three-hour walk open to any audience member who wishes to join them – a journey dedicated to looking, experiencing and connecting with the landscape.
The Nomadics Walk is optional. You are welcome to come straight to the performance, though we encourage you to join the walk and make the most of the experience.
A Nomadics Walk ticket is required to take part, covering both the walk and the Nomadics performance.

PERFORMANCE ONLY – buy your ticket here.
In Nomadics, eight dancers explore how to lend a voice to nature. It is the place par excellence to unwind, but what do we give back?
The performers depict how nature looks back at man and suffers their footsteps. They embody how she reclaims her place and retaliates. This is done from an inadequate - because human - but also infectious and whimsical imagination.
Nomadics allows dancers to become a (passing) raging landscape. Sometimes they are tree, sometimes they are grass. Sometimes they are rock or human. This constant transformation results in beauty as well as friction: there is tension in the air. But as physics shows us: friction eventually leads to warmth, deceleration or change. Or again: through the struggle, the dancers in Nomadics seek connection, both with nature and with each other.
In the process, music is in strong symbiosis with dance, as always at Voetvolk. Maarten Van Cauwenberghe has recorded sounds during walks - footsteps, water, wind in the trees, highways... – and has turned them into environmental techno.
Voetvolk (Dutch for ‘infantry’) is a Belgian contemporary dance and performance company, founded in 2007 by dancer/choreographer Lisbeth Gruwez and musician/composer Maarten Van Cauwenberghe. Their work is an ongoing conversation between corporal and auditive movement: Lisbeth Gruwez and Maarten Van Cauwenberghe share a unique artistic DNA that has been developed both consciously and intuitively. Their chemistry creates an organic symbiosis within a defined and multifaceted frame, ensuring that the aural and visual physicality remain constantly alive. Voetvolk is actively engaged in devising new ways to connect with the contemporary dance audience, and reach beyond it. Through Lisbeth Gruwez dances Bob Dylan, and Into the Open Voetvolk succeeded to bring music lovers into contact with contemporary dance. Nomadics, invites people to undergo long hikes with artistic team and dance crew before watching the show, as a way to explore different ways of connection with the audience. Their performances have been shown at Festival d’Avignon, Festival de Marseille, Julidans, Tanz im August, Dance Umbrella and the Venice Biennale, among many others.
