Sismògraf’s Eruptions in the upcoming 2023 edition are families of shows that share a certain theme, perspective or interest. This year’s edition will feature four eruptions: Still Life / Mineral / Plant / Interspecies.
What is a still life in the 21st century? From esoteric or religious meanings in the Middle Ages to spaces in which to experiment with composition in the movements of the early avant-garde, still life has been a format used to explain the temporal and social context of each era. Collections of objects that remind us of the vanitas of today’s hyper-consumerism, of objects made from contemporary waste or the aesthetics of still life, with all its chiaroscuro.
How from the live arts we approach the non-living, the earth or minerals, for example. How do we try to get out of our anthropocentric comfort zone to live differently in the world? How do we look at space from our planet, beyond commercial or militarised purposes? How do we build a geopoetics of our environment?
Domination or cooperation with the plant kingdom? The emerging intelligence of plants can give us clues about how to improve our relationship with other humans, how to communicate, how to cooperate… And how in the artistic field we make proposals to transcend the utilitarianism with which we have traditionally abused plants (and which implies exploitation, extinction, capitalism...) to suggest new forms of relationships.
How do we relate to the rest of the species on our planet? Do we necessarily have to create emotional relationships? And with species that do not feel? Can we produce human art for non-human species? In the post-humanist era we live in, do we stop being subjects and become an aggregate of relationships?
